I have been following Greg’s “milk spout” and not rolling in the lips teachings with much improvement in tone and range plus not getting tired as easily as before. I notice that James Morrison really rolls his lips inward, I tried that and failed. We are all different so I guess it is just a matter of what works for you but, I will stick with…[Read more]

This morning, Oct.31, Greg mentioned the tapping of the foot while doing the Carmine Caruso 6 Note Method. A great explanation of the Caruso method can be found on You Tube. It is by Julie Landsman, the French Horn teacher at Julliard who was a student of Caruso. She does a very good explanation of breathing, tapping you foot and resting during…[Read more]

When I start on the G below the staff my tongue is just behind the very bottom of my front lower teeth. As I go up the staff my tongue begins to rise. At 2nd staff line G it has moved to behind the lower front teeth. At the G just on top of the staff the tongue is just on top of the lower teeth. At about high C it rests on the top of the lower…[Read more]

I have been rereading the Caruso Method Book. His rule #4. says to breathe only thru your nose to “reduce the amount of muscular activity to produce a note”. Maybe it is due to my nose physiology but I can not get enough air fast enough thru my nose to play long phrases. Is this a common problem?

They say “play low to play high”. Using the relaxed open throat I can, at times, reach D flat 8va below staff. But my range is still not really improving. am I wasting time on pedal tones and should concentrate on the notes contained in the 8va above the staff?
