TRUMPET FINGERING CHART

EASY TO USE TRUMPET FINGERING CHART

A trumpet fingering chart is a great tool to have on board when just starting out on your newly acquired instrument. If you are ready to start playing your trumpet then this simple aide will make learning a lot easier.

The trumpet fingering chart is very simple to use.

  1. There are 3 valves on the trumpet which we number 1, 2, and 3. The 1 valve is the valve closest to the mouthpiece, valve 2 is the valve in the middle, and valve 3 is closest to the bell.
  2. The numbers under the stave represent which valves are pressed down.
  3. The staves which have 2 notes on them are the same note but have 2 different names. These are called enharmonic notes.

If you are an educator you are welcome to download the chart for use with your students.

TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

If you are just starting then you are not going to be able to play all of these notes. Generally, the first 5 notes, Low C,D,E,F and G is the place to start.

We would recommend a teacher and a graded course like WindWorks to help you produce the correct pitch and start with the correct technique.

If you are practicing at home we would recommend playing the note on a piano as that will help you hear the pitch you are meant to be playing.

There is a lot going on to produce the correct pitch. Look at the diagram below of the C major scale. The note C is open valves but there are two different pitches. One is an octave higher than the other. It is important to hear the note pitch. This is all about creating the correct neural pathways in your brain so then it ultimately becomes second nature to play.

It is a lot easier to learn correctly with a structure that is graded. Don’t teach yourself a whole lot of errors that are harder to undo later on.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT PRESSING DOWN A VALVE

The trumpet fingering chart is the standard chromatic chart used for trumpet players worldwide. But there is a lot more involved in getting a good sound from your trumpet than just pressing down the correct valves.

There is a whole technique for making the notes sound strong, in-tune, toneful, well articulated, and with the least amount of effort in the body.

The trumpet has evolved over many years and now there is a new and better way to play your instrument that allows more flexibility, more endurance, better articulation, wider range, and a purer tone without the tension and stress seen in a lot of trumpet players today.

Without doubt, starting your trumpet journey with the correct and most efficient technique will have you reaching your goals and finding satisfaction a lot quicker. The WindWorks Trumpet Academy is the evolution of trumpet playing. It is the place to go from beginner to virtuoso.
