In years gone by, early instruments had no valves. Tuning was determined by their length and their notes were limited to the natural harmonics within the pipe itself.
As time moved on, holes were added to the pipe which added more options to the player.
Thus the tradition of mouthpiece buzzing was born.
The only way to play additional chromatic notes was to create the pitch with the lips by buzzing the mouthpiece and letting the instrument amplify the sound of the mouthpiece buzz. This buzzing method was physically demanding and required the vibration of the lips to be created vertically using the lip muscles.
In the higher register (above high C on the trumpet), modern instruments still amplify the mouthpiece buzz but in the lower range buzzing is not necessary.
Now with the invention of modern instruments and valves, playing is far easier and the need to buzz no longer exists.
