[Music] today i’m going to show you in just 60 seconds what it feels like to play easily and how to make a better sound on your instrument for better brass playing and faster results in just 60 seconds so you’d like to play a little bit more easily or sound a bit better here’s a great trick get your finger bend it around and we’re going to put it between our teeth take a slow soft breath in now repeat with your eyes closed do this several times now

it’s either going to feel familiar or foreign the more you do it the more you’ll be familiar with the feeling and the sensation that it is like to play with a big open resonant sound opening up what i call the body’s constable and we repeat that over the next 24 hours over the next week and over the next months to reinforce the feeling of open free playing when we add the instrument to a resonant concert hall then you’re going to be able to play with a

lot more ease without going into what is referred to as the velselva maneuver if you pick up something heavy we choke and we engage too much and everything becomes tight this is not the best way to play and the way to eliminate it is this give it a try i hope you found this video useful and i’m going to share with you in 60 second virtuoso how to eliminate the pinching the clamping down in the middle of the lips which destroys brass players have you been

thinking about how to improve your playing but don’t know what to do and you’re scared of wasting time let me get you started and i’ll show you the right steps for better sound better technique and better range learn more at mystery to mastery dot com slash wind work sign up simply click the link below and let’s get started

Greg Spence introduces a simple breath and observation exercise for exploring an open playing sensation. This short archive video is part of his 60 Second Virtuoso series.

What is the aim of this exercise?

The demonstration encourages noticing the sensation of a slow breath and an open Body’s Concert Hall. Greg asks players to compare that familiar feeling with the extra tightening that can appear when adding the instrument.
