I play the piano and also practice other non-musical skill-based activities. What I’ve found is similar to your experience: often taking a break (days, weeks) results in fundamental technique improvement even if we regress in terms of how fast/how accurate we used to be. These days I take advantage of this by working hard at a particular problem…[Read more]

Nice, thanks for the suggestions! And no, not feeling particularly tight/stiff. Just thought it’d be a good idea to know how to encourage relaxation of the embouchure muscles if I ever need it or as a simple daily warmup/cool-down.

So I’ve had one lesson with Greg where we worked on the non-instrument stuff (BCH breath, tissue work, etc). After that and several days of experimenting, I’ve gotten to the point where I can do this (https://youtu.be/3zIGzr8iL1c) on the trumpet.

Thanks Greg 🙂 We had a great first lesson, and I woke up the next day with this in my head. Think it was my brain’s way of synthesising the stuff you kept repeating during the lesson.

That’s why we don’t need to push/blow into the trumpet, we just need to strike the air column enough to start it vibrating, and then maintain the vibration for as long as we want.

Pushing/blowing into the trumpet is like trying to play drums by smashing the drumstick all the way…[Read more]

Hello! I’ve been looking for a solid approach to playing trumpet and am so glad I found WindWorks. It looks like it’s the wind equivalent of the Taubman Approach (piano). The Taubman Approach saved my life at the piano, and I’ve been looking for a wind method that matches the Taubman Approach’s commitment to anatomical truth.
