I too have struggled with a lot of things in the past few weeks to the point that I almost quit entirely. But decided to take a day off now and then to shake out the stress. I have found that if I pay attention to what I’m doing with my lips when I whistle this I believe is very close to what I need to be doing when I play the horn. I seem to be able to play the horn using my lips in a similar way. Not sure if it’s the right direction to take but I can play reasonably well within the range up to B above the staff but no further. I think I understand how I need to play higher notes using a slightly different aperture. Sometimes I can play up to high C just above the staff but it is very difficult…I push, squeeze and blow way too hard as I always do in the upper register. I would like to be playing high while releasing air like I was “blowing bubbles but so far no such luck. Often I am fortunate to have a lightbulb go on and finalize realize what needs to be done. So thank you to all you struggling learners out there. A lot of this learning has to do with each individual’s interpretation of the instructions. So…hearing interpretations from others are very useful. Now I will go back to earlier lessons to see what else I can interpret differently and then take another shot at the high notes. For a couple of days my lips simply gave up on me and I couldn’t play anything with any competence! Thus my almost decision to just quit. However, if I also can’t play the way I used to play, perhaps I’m on my way to playing the new way. Savvy?
