      Hi,
Does anyone have any thoughts about practicing with a mute, especially for beginners.
I would much rather not use one. But holed up in a small flat makes it impossible.
I sometimes try and play as quietly as possible without it.
Is this helpful to general development or detrimental?
      Any advice would be appreciated.
      Thanks,
      Leo.

      Hi Leo,

There was another thread “Exercise with silent brass mute” late last year in which some of us traded posts about mutes. I can’t seem to link it here, but if you search for that in the top right corner of this page you’ll see it.

Bottom line is that there are some pros and cons to playing with a mute, and some don’t like doing it unless absolutely necessary. I prefer not to, but do on occasion and we’re moving and I may have to play with a mute more going forward.

      Best,

      John

      Thanks for that.
Still wondering about practicing really quietly.
I have the feeling it’s helping with the breathing and intonation. Like you say leading with the air.
Any bad side effects you know of?
      Thanks,
      Leo.
