• I am an ameteur player and worked with the WindWorks program for about 6 months up through the moderato series and part of the allegro series. I am now suffering greatly and have stopped doing it. The point of exit came when I decided I needed to perform some music, I haven’t been playing with any groups for years. I then found that all my…[Read more]

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really did give it up for 3 days. I cleaned the house instead, I felt totally different after this. It was a relief. Maybe we need to go through things like this because it gave me time to think about it more creatively. What if…

I can’t stop playing, because there are days where I just KNOW if I pick up…[Read more]

I’m tired of experimenting. I want someone to tell me exactly how to do it. WW is not helping. No matter what I do my range is always, for 20 years, been G just above the staff. Can’t figure it out. Tired of it. No matter what I do. And to see any results from experimentation you have to try it for months and honestly I just get worse the…[Read more]

What exactly do you do with your face to increase pitch on the trumpet. How do you do it.

  • steve started the topic How to change pitch in the forum WindWorks 4 years, 1 month ago

I’ve been working with the WW system for a while now, I find the leadpipe seems to be very illuminating as far as what you are doing with your lips. But I don’t know if I’m doing it right, at all. There are so many ways you can form your lips to play the instrument. I understand ahhooo to get an initial embouchure formation. But what do you do…[Read more]

I think when it’s easy, it is also easy to repeat it too many times and unknowingly sap your stamina without being aware of it until it’s too late. I would go on from the easy ones. They might feel good, but you won’t feel good later. IMHO.

  • steve started the topic breath support in the forum WindWorks 4 years, 1 month ago

I have been through the first section of the course, through Moderato, now a few times, and I have developed a fundamental question.

Is it intended that when playing the harmonic slurs, that there is basically NO breath support? Greg speaks of no abs kicking and I’ve been honestly trying to do that. But I’ve found if I REALLY, REALLY, try to do…[Read more]

  • To answer some more questions,

I have been able to slur more easily between octaves as you have asked, it is much easier to go G to G etc.

I have felt the burn in the corners, of the mouth, but this concerns me a bit, because I have felt something very similar previous to starting WW after doing many reps of other lip slur exercises. I’m not…[Read more]

  • Practice video Friday 9-6-19, Moderato C Series. Exercises are timestamped in the YT description box.

I think I am learning quite a bit from everything going on here and really appreciate your feedback. My practice today was Much more focussed and limited and shorter. No lip or mp buzzing or leadpipe playing, and a Much briefer warm-up. I…[Read more]

  • johnelwood,

Thanks again. I’m going to redouble my efforts on being focussed to WindWorks. I’m going to try to get through the exercises more quickly with less extraneous playing. I hadn’t realized playing trumpet required so much intensive training. I always thought I would ‘figure it out’. Not being a music major I never had the experience…[Read more]

  • Hello Everyone,

I have continued to record practices, I think you can learn a lot from watching yourself and others can help too.

I have put timestamps in the YT description section that you can click to go instantly to the timestamp listed. So although I posted the whole practice video, you can easily jump to the pertinent WindWorks…[Read more]

I think again you have really good points, thanks. I am going to take people’s advice from these discussions. I think how I think about playing/practicing very important. I have often practiced by how the lips felt, how it felt when I COULD do certain things I wanted to do but I think practice needs to be more disciplined and…[Read more]

I would be interested to see you play if you post a link. It’s easy to upload to YT. Or you can use Google Drive and just give permission to people who have the link if you want it to be local to this forum.

Thanks again to everyone. This seems to be a good system with good people so I’m continuing with the course.

    I think I…[Read more]

  • Ronald:

I have done lip slurs my whole life as a trumpeter, so that may explain my abilities. I’m up to 16ths @144bpm on a good day. The thing is, I have done probably THOUSANDS of hours of lip slurs, out of so many books, specifically Irons, but NEVER seemed to get anything from doing them! Complicated ones! Went all over the place zig…[Read more]

Thanks for having a look at these, I appreciate it very much. Maybe we can all post vids of our progress. I bet we could put links in the profile page which is not accessible right now. There are some apps that make it really easy to upload vids to YT but I’m using a camcorder.

  • johnelwood,

I have noticed that I can ascend to G just above the staff and the Bb harmonic using pretty much the embouchure that’s being developed here. HOWEVER, and maybe this is why I got upset, is that although I find I can do it that way, my range is pretty much the same as when I play with my previous embouchure. That result was quite…[Read more]

  • Thanks for the replies again. Trumpet playing is so weird. After I had my awful day where I was dead tired at the end, I had an hour break, then I played some low Cichowicz flow studies to recover, they went ok but thought I had little strength in reserve. After I thought I had recovered enough I played out of Schlossberg. Long tones went…[Read more]
