I’ve played on a large bore Bb since I was in 8th grade. I’ve owned two Bb’s that were ML bore twice in my life, and spent about 3 or 4 years playing on both. I’ve never been able to really make them work in the upper register. I’ve been a solid double G or G# player since my senior year in high school, and when I played the ML bore trumpets it was always a struggle to play in this register.

The thing is, there are so many great things about a ML bore trumpet. Slotting is much better, tonguing/multiple tonguing is crisper and easier. I’ve never been able to successfully switch to a ML horn for all my playing because of the struggle’s I’ve had in the upper register.

Is switching to a ML horn even a possibility at this point? I’m 61, and play professionally. It just shuts down around E or F and it’s infuriating.

      Thanks!

      Mike

My 2 cents worth: the bore of a trumpet would have little to do with playing in the upper register. Playing in the upper register is a product of embouchure/aperture (shape and size), air, and the coordination of these components to work together.

Ok, I hear you. But it *does* have a detrimental effect on my upper register when I go from L to ML horns. Every. Single. Time. I’d love to be able to unravel the mystery as to why this happens for me.
