So I’m just starting out on my WW journey, and enjoying it very much so far.
Just at Largo stage as yet. Some of the concepts you talk about, Greg, aren’t new to me, and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.
But I’ll be honest. How do we have masters like Mendez on one hand, who say that playing takes no more breath than normal conversation, while on the other, a world full of bad teachers and students struggling and blowing like crazy?
Please forgive my question, but I’m having a hard time getting my head around the fact that this abyss has sprung up between these two ways of playing.
How has it come to be that the whole world seems to have made trumpet playing a whole lot harder than Mendez says it is?
Forgive my rambling, Greg… it’s getting late here and I should probably be in bed…

      Love the course!

Hey there VeeTG, great post! How do we indeed… It is just the way it is, efficient players, hard working players. People sharing what they think they are doing and perpetuating the “it’s hard work playing brass” myth.

If you are at a point in your playing where things are not working for you, you are in the right place.

I does not really matter why or how this has all unfolded over the decades, the fact is that it has and my endeavour is to help sort it out.

Ramble away any time! Enjoy the course.

      Cheers,
      Greg

      Ah. This.
I’m finding this again and again. I guess one of the drawbacks of learning on line is that some simple things become difficult – and at the moment I’m trying to buy a new mouthpiece and trumpet.
this week I went to a guy who was selling some mouthpieces second hand. He’s a great player. I’m not. I’ve been focusing on my 1% and thinking I was making some ground – I’ve been more relaxed than ever, and it feels like things are changing. But I’m hopeless.
I’m at the LESSTHANLARGO stage.Lol. Despite practicing every day.
Anyway… this teacher was like – you need to play that E at the top of the staff. Which I can’t… And then he said – ” Just tighten your lips and blow faster”.
The next day at the trumpet shop was the same. It’s so embarrassing to be trying out a trumpet when you can only play five notes….
The guy at the shop was like – “You need to tighten up your diaphragm… Who’s your teacher???”… Everyone I meet who has ever played has told me I won’t make it, and has told me that I need to blow faster and support from my diaphragm.
It’s confusing for sure. Trumpet is easily the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.
So I feel you VeeTG. Either we are countercultural revolutionaries, or we are lost…
