    Indeed !

Greg, how we learn correct SHAPE ? by playing the note often (when rested) ? doing lip slurs ?

  • Hello, me again with another question/problem 😉

Often my high notes are shrill or hissing, and after hitting high note the followings sound bad.

For exemple when playing legato exercise 20 of Arban, after the first high G the sound doesn’t come out. Or when playing exercise 25 of Clarke sometimes the high B and C comes out well, then the…[Read more]

  • I do only moutpiece buzz, because I can’t do lips buzz the right way, only by pinching the lips. Sadly, I don’t see improvement in my upper register.
Maybe I should be patient too and keep trying ?

  • I need to use mute everyday if I don’t want to be kick out of my house. I use it so much that there are cracks on it (!) and it doesn’t stay mounted on the trumpet all day as before, I have to put back again and again. So far I don’t feel it really destructive, but its sure not the best way to practice. I have choosen a mute with not too much…[Read more]

    Thank you ! 🙂

I think I’m overanalysing what I’m doing. But I definitively can’t play hight with no adbominal contraction.

I have so many questions about the MTM…

I notice that if I don’t warm-up enough the notes usually don’t speak. And if I do very soft playing before its easier to make the notes speak.

When the notes don’t speak I either stop or continue just blowing nicely without the sound. Then I reenforce the feeling of freedom and try again, until it…[Read more]

Thanks for your answer ! I thought is was just a matter of hard work too, and like you it didn’t end well…
I have been working on the MTM everyday for two months now, went back to the beginning several times. Trumpet is mostly an internal work, its so easy to do it the wrong way, even with the course.

  • matthieu replied to the topic Valsalva Maneuver in the forum WindWorks 5 years, 4 months ago

I just read something about singing notes in your head, and I wonder if it’s not the Valsalva maneuver, maybe it’s the vocal chords trying to interact ? Im confused 🙂

    Hello,

I had a problem two years ago, lot of bad sensations in the throat while playing. It almost goes away, reappearing sometimes only when playing loud, fast or high. It’s like if the throat close for a split second, and the air force this closing to pass thought. But I had a lot of this during my warm-ups this morning. Could be it the…[Read more]

    Thanks for your answer.

I knew you won’t like the idea of “blowing harder”. I was wondering what can I do right now. Seems following your course allow a resonant sound, but requires patience. I will take my time.

For the mute, I wish I could play without.

    Hello,

I practice a lot alone, with a mute, and when I play with my band I can’t be loud enough.
My question is, is blowing harder the (only) way to sound louder?

  • matthieu replied to the topic Allegro in the forum WindWorks 5 years, 5 months ago

    Hello,

As I understand it, you strive to eliminate all negative tension in the singing C, then play the exercises with the best sound you can, which indeed feel easier.
I could go to the Allegro E Singing C quite fast, but from there I can’t make bad tension go away.
Maybe the exercises are for all levels players, so it might be easy for you…[Read more]

Indeed this doesn’t happen when singing. I don’t always take a full breath, but I do for long phrase. Maybe I don’t breathe well when I do a quick breathe. I thought with my years of playing I would know now. I’ll try what you suggests to do.
    Thank you !

  • matthieu replied to the topic Lungs overfilled in the forum WindWorks 5 years, 5 months ago

Before you asked me how I can add air without having the time to breathe in, I meant where is no break and have to breathe in quickly between two notes.

  • matthieu started the topic Lungs overfilled in the forum WindWorks 5 years, 5 months ago

    Hello,

I take care to take a good break as you show in the course, but I have a problem. When I start a long exercise where I don’t have time to breathe in, I progressively add too much air in my lungs and start to choke. If there is a small break, I have to breathe out this surplus before breathe in.

Do you know why and what should/shouldn’t I…[Read more]
